Some Key Messages From Peace in Our Lifetime
- We have never seen so many people creating peaceful solutions
to conflict. Epic change is flowing across the earth as never
before in the form of citizen voices, actions, and organizations
working for nonviolence. Even as people pour out their despair
and anger by fighting, the outpouring for peace is far, far
greater.
- Peace is up to us. We can no longer live the illusion that
peace will somehow be delivered to us by leaders wiser and more
powerful than we are. We are the wise and powerful ones who
will create the peace for which we long. We have to take responsibility
for building a peaceful culture in our lives, homes, schools,
workplaces, and communities.
- Every day, peace is a conscious decision. We choose peace
when we transform the anger within us, nurture more loving relationships,
and solve our conflicts more creatively.
- Even when global peace seems an impossible stretch, we can
reach for and anchor peace in our own lives. We can live peacefully,
right where we are, and the world moves toward greater peace.
- The dozens of exceptional peacemakers featured in Peace in Our Lifetime echo one powerful truth: the same peace
measures that calm chronic tensions all over the world are the
same ones that can ease the conflicts in our own lives. Peace
is generated by the way we live in our lives and conduct our
relationships.
- Our personal peace and the peace of the world are linked powerfully.
Because of our connection, our responses in everyday moments
to stay calm and loving affect the peace of the entire world.
- To make peace in our personal world - and the world at large
- we have to become comfortable with conflict. Conflict serves
a powerful purpose in our lives. It creates necessary tension
forces us to get clear on our values and needs, and allows us
a chance to express those values and needs directly and honestly.
Conflict gives us an opportunity to creatively and powerfully
solve our differences so the common good can be served.
- Peacemakers channel their anger for good. We can learn how
to convert our anger into passion and determination to make
positive changes for ourselves and others. We can use our inner
fire as a force for social action.
- Forgiveness is a powerful peace tool. We often resist forgiveness
because we think it serves the person who wounded us. Forgiveness
is about honoring and serving ourselves. It is about giving
ourselves permission to be our best and highest selves. Don't
wait for an apology. Forgive and enjoy life more fully.
- Listening to others deeply and compassionately can transform
any conflict. The compassionate listening movement is gaining
powerful momentum worldwide. Many people are learning compassionate
listening to listen to the stories of people who are angry,
lost, and ignored. Beneath any anger is usually a story that's
not been heard. Beneath any great rage is often a loss that
hasn't been fully mourned.
- Peace-centered communities are cropping up all over the world,
from towns in Wisconsin to African villages, from inner-city
neighborhoods to internet communities. People are seeking and
forming communities that support compassionate, tolerant, and
respectful relationships.
